About Seneca Orchards Apples
Seneca Orchards was established in 1972 in Seneca Castle, New York. We planted our apple trees in 1974 and made our first sale in 1978. Our orchard is still owned and operated by Charles “Bud” Smith, who has over 55 years of experience in the orchard business.
Bud is retired from Cornell’s New York State Agricultural Experiment Station (NYSAES) in Geneva where he worked for 37 years as a research specialist of plant pathology. He has been published worldwide for his reports on fruit tree diseases and served on the committee of Integrated Pest Management.
Bud and his youngest son, Ryan W. Smith, together farmed Seneca Orchards, up until Ryan met and married his now wife, Ellen Eastman Smith. Together Ryan and Ellen began their dream of cash crop farming in Ovid, NY and with it took over the business of The Pumpkin Stand. Together, with the help of both families, they have brought the world of Pumpkins and Apples together.
In 2022 Bud made the difficult decision to close his U-Pick Apple Orchard and focus primarily on apples for Cider production. You can still find his Cider with us at The Pumpkin Stand, Ovid, NY.
